Independent Report – A tense clash erupted on Friday evening in downtown Los Angeles, where riot police confronted anti-ICE protesters following a series of federal immigration raids across the city. The raids, conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), resulted in the detention of dozens of people. This tense clash between law enforcement and demonstrators marked a dramatic and volatile end to a day filled with heightened emotions and unrest.
Live footage from Reuters showed officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) lined up in full riot gear. They were seen holding batons and tear gas launchers while facing a large group of demonstrators. Authorities issued orders for the crowd to disperse as night approached. The protesters, however, refused to leave peacefully.
Shortly after the standoff began, some members of the crowd threw broken pieces of concrete at the officers. In response, the police fired tear gas, pepper spray, and “flash-bang” grenades to push the crowd back. There was no immediate confirmation regarding arrests at the scene.
LAPD spokesperson Drake Madison told Reuters that the protest had been declared an unlawful assembly. According to Madison, anyone who failed to leave the area after the warning was subject to arrest. The LAPD was not involved in the immigration raids themselves but was dispatched to control the resulting civil unrest.

Earlier in the day, television broadcasts captured unmarked military-style vehicles and federal vans moving through Los Angeles. These vehicles carried uniformed ICE agents to various locations targeted for enforcement. According to the Los Angeles City News Service (CNS), ICE agents visited sites including a Home Depot in the Westlake District, a fashion store in the city’s Fashion District, and a warehouse in South Los Angeles.
The raids were part of a broader immigration crackdown initiated by President Donald Trump. His administration has promised to significantly increase the arrest and deportation of undocumented migrants. Friday’s enforcement action marked yet another sweep in the administration’s ongoing effort to target immigrants in multiple U.S. cities.
As news of the raids spread, spontaneous protests broke out at several locations. At one raid site, David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) of California, was reportedly injured and detained by ICE. The SEIU issued a statement condemning the arrest, stating that Huerta was acting within his First Amendment rights by observing and recording the actions of law enforcement officers.
There were no further details provided regarding Huerta’s injuries or whether he faced any charges. ICE did not immediately respond to requests from Reuters for additional information about either the enforcement actions or Huerta’s detention.
As protests continued, demonstrators gathered in front of a federal courthouse, where they spray-painted anti-ICE slogans on the building’s walls. Crowds also assembled near a local jail, where it was believed that some of the detained individuals were being held. These actions prompted a stronger response from law enforcement, which included declaring the demonstration unlawful.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a strong statement opposing the raids. She criticized the actions of federal agents, stating that these tactics create fear and destabilize communities. According to Bass, the federal immigration raids undermine basic safety and trust within the city.
The unrest in Los Angeles reflects growing national concerns over immigration policies and the methods used to enforce them. While ICE continues to carry out large-scale operations under the directive of the federal government, local officials and advocacy groups are pushing back against what they see as unjust and aggressive tactics.
The events of Friday highlight the deep divisions and tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in the United States. As protests continue and political leaders respond, the debate over immigration policy remains a central issue in communities across the country.
