Independent Report – Indonesian music legend, Titiek Puspa, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the age of 87, around 4:25 PM WIB, at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta. Her passing has left a profound sense of loss, especially within the Indonesian music industry. As a singer and musician, she has left behind an invaluable legacy. Her melodious voice and works, such as the legendary song “Kupu-Kupu Malam”, have etched a long history in the country’s music scene.
Titiek Puspa’s talent was evident from a young age. Her distinctive voice even managed to impress Indonesia’s first president, Bung Karno. An interesting story from their meeting at the Presidential Palace shows how Bung Karno viewed her as an extraordinary talent. On one occasion, she performed in front of Bung Karno and the palace guests, wearing a traditional kain jarit and kebaya complete with a sanggul (traditional hairstyle). After hearing her voice, a captivated Bung Karno immediately requested that Titiek become the palace singer. Titiek Puspa was surprised by the request and felt an overwhelming sense of joy. “Wow, your voice is beautiful, you’re lovely, and you wear the kain so well,” Bung Karno said, announcing that from that day on, Titiek Puspa would become the palace singer. For Titiek, this moment was a great honor, as though she had received a form of graduation.
Titiek Puspa’s success and career in music were deeply rooted in her belief that all she achieved was a gift from God. In several interviews, she expressed her gratitude for everything she had accomplished. Titiek believed that everyone had their own role in shaping the nation, and she felt that her role was to enrich Indonesia’s music scene. “I enjoy all of this because I know it’s all the will of the Almighty,” she said in one interview.

However, Titiek Puspa’s journey was not always smooth. She faced numerous health challenges from a young age. She even changed her name several times due to frequent illnesses. Titiek was once known as Kadarwati, Sudarwati, and Sumarti, before finally settling on the name Titiek Puspa, which became famous. In a few interviews, she also shared her struggle with stage 3 cervical cancer, which was diagnosed when she was 73 years old. This illness brought a painful and challenging experience for her. “It felt like being beaten by a thief, my whole body hurt,” she said at the time. Despite this, Titiek Puspa continued to fight against the disease with incredible strength.
Titiek Puspa also encountered various life challenges, including the anger and sadness she felt from the disease that was slowly consuming her. At one point, she even felt desperate and expressed to God, “God, if I am no longer needed, take me. But if I must remain in this world, give me a sign.” At that time, she was overseas and asked her child to buy her a ticket back to Jakarta. Upon arriving in Jakarta, she met a meditation expert who helped her rediscover her inner strength.
Throughout her career. Titiek Puspa was known not only as a singer but also as a woman with immense strength in facing life’s trials. She inspired many people with her resilience and dedication. Her passing leaves many memories, but also serves as proof that the life of an artist can be a journey filled with both joy and sorrow.
With the passing of Titiek Puspa, the Indonesian music world loses one of its great icons. However, her legacy and contributions will always be remembered by the Indonesian people. Especially through the songs that have transcended time.
