Independent Report – The concept of a “Pemilu Raya” (Grand Election) has recently gained attention. Particularly after the Party Solidaritas Indonesia (PSI) decided to adopt a new approach to selecting its leadership. This shift in leadership selection, described as “Pemilu Raya,” is a significant departure from traditional methods. And also it has drawn inspiration from President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) vision for a more open political party structure.
Jokowi, the seventh President of Indonesia, has long envisioned the establishment of a party that is open to all. Or what he refers to as a “Partai Super Tbk” (Super Party). His forward-thinking ideas, including creating a more inclusive and transparent political system, have caught the attention of PSI. In fact, PSI has taken Jokowi’s suggestions to heart and is now planning to implement this concept in their internal leadership processes.
Andy Budiman, the Vice Chairman of PSI, acknowledged that the “Pemilu Raya” idea is indeed inspired by discussions the party had with Jokowi. He revealed during a press conference that the input from the President had been valuable and truly “out of the box.” According to Andy, PSI has long considered Jokowi as a mentor. And also the President’s innovative suggestions have provided a fresh perspective for the party.
In his statement, Andy explained that Jokowi’s suggestion to have party leadership elected directly by the members rather than through traditional appointments resonated with PSI. “When President Jokowi talked about the idea of a super open party. We saw this as a progressive approach,” Andy said. “He also mentioned that it would be better if the party leader were elected directly. This got us thinking, and we began looking into how this practice is implemented in other parts of the world.”

PSI’s interest led the party to study similar practices in other countries. Andy mentioned that there are already several political parties, particularly those led by young people. In countries such as Spain, Italy, Germany, and other Scandinavian nations that have implemented similar systems. These parties use an electronic voting (e-vote) system, allowing members to vote for their preferred leader. The elected leader is then formally confirmed through a straightforward process. Andy noted that these global examples of direct elections within political parties demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the idea.
The concept of “Pemilu Raya” is seen as a new trend in global politics. Particularly among parties that attract younger generations. As political landscapes evolve, the idea of direct election of party leadership is gaining traction. Andy emphasized that while the idea may have originated from President Jokowi’s input, it aligns with PSI’s vision for the future. The party believes that such a system would bring transparency and a more democratic approach to leadership selection.
The “Pemilu Raya” concept is not only a reflection of PSI’s willingness to innovate but also a nod to the broader global movement towards more inclusive and transparent political processes. PSI views this new direction as something that could benefit the party and its members. As it embraces a modern, democratic approach to leadership.
As the party continues to explore the implementation of “Pemilu Raya,” it hopes to inspire other political organizations to adopt similar models, fostering greater engagement and participation in the political process. Andy concluded by saying that the feedback from Jokowi has helped PSI refine its ideas, and they are confident that this new method of leadership selection will benefit both the party and its supporters in the long run.
In conclusion, PSI’s adoption of the “Pemilu Raya” concept represents a bold step forward in Indonesian politics, showing the party’s commitment to innovation and democratic values. By drawing inspiration from President Jokowi’s vision and looking to international examples, PSI hopes to create a more open and transparent political system that better reflects the needs and aspirations of its members.
