He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order as the party prepares to select its new leader.
Rusli emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful and orderly environment within the party as it prepares to elect its new leader. He warned against any outside interference that could create confusion or discord among party members. “Hopefully, no external party will interfere in PPP’s internal matters or create disturbances.” Rusli said when contacted by merdeka.com on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
He also highlighted the strength and capability of PPP’s cadres, Describing the party as one that prides itself on having competent and qualified members who are ready to take on leadership roles. According to Rusli, the PPP’s foundation is built on capable cadres who have the potential to guide the party forward effectively. “PPP is a cadre-based party with many competent members,” he stated confidently.
In recent developments, the Chairman of the PPP Advisory Council, M. Romahurmuziy, widely known as Romy, revealed that he had discussed potential candidates for the PPP chairmanship with the seventh President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, commonly referred to as Jokowi. Romy admitted that the names of possible leaders had been considered carefully in these conversations.
One of the prominent names that emerged from these discussions is Amran Sulaiman, the current Minister of Agriculture. Romy indicated that Amran has gained strong support as a suitable candidate to lead the PPP. Especially with an eye toward the party’s goals leading up to 2029. “I have shared several names, and from those, President Jokowi believes Amran is the most appropriate for the future needs of PPP,” Romy explained. He added that Jokowi’s assessment was informed by his experience with Amran. Who served as a minister in Jokowi’s first cabinet.

Romy further shared that he has maintained a close friendship with Amran for nearly two decades. Which gives him insight into Amran’s qualifications and dedication. This long-standing relationship has encouraged Romy to consider Amran as a strong contender for the leadership position within PPP. The personal connection also gives Romy confidence in Amran’s ability to lead the party toward its strategic goals.
However, despite the encouragement and strong consideration, Amran himself remains cautious about stepping forward as a candidate for PPP chairmanship. He continues to weigh his options carefully due to his current responsibilities. Amran’s role as Minister of Agriculture in the government led by Prabowo Subianto places heavy demands on his time and energy. Which has made him hesitant to commit to a new political leadership role at this moment.
Romy revealed that convincing Amran to consider running for the party’s top position has required multiple efforts. Romy mentioned that he even traveled to Makassar to personally persuade Amran to take the opportunity. Despite these efforts, Amran remains in a “wait and see” mode, indicating that he has yet to make a final decision.
Amran’s hesitancy is understandable given the significant workload he carries as a key figure in the government’s food sovereignty program. This program is a vital component of the current administration’s priorities, and Amran’s leadership in this area is seen as critical. Therefore, his reluctance stems from a sense of responsibility and commitment to his ministerial duties, which remain demanding and time-consuming.
In summary, the PPP is currently in a sensitive phase as it prepares to elect its new chairman. Party leaders like Rusli Effendi call for unity and caution against any external disruptions that might affect the party’s stability. Meanwhile, internal deliberations and discussions with prominent political figures such as Jokowi are ongoing to identify the most suitable candidate for the party’s future leadership. Amran Sulaiman’s name is increasingly prominent in these discussions, though he himself remains undecided due to his current governmental responsibilities. The coming months will be crucial in determining the direction the PPP will take and who will lead it into the next phase of its political journey.
