Independent Report – Zulkifli Hasan, the Chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN). He has stated that anyone who is truly committed to working hard has the opportunity to run for the vice-presidential position in the 2029 elections. He emphasized that PAN is an open party and welcomes anyone, including its ministers, who wishes to step forward and express their ambition to become the vice president.
“PAN is an open party. Our members, regardless of their position, including ministers, are welcome. If they have the desire and commitment, anyone can compete for the vice-presidency,” Zulkifli Hasan remarked during a Halal Bihalal event at the PAN headquarters in South Jakarta on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
However, Zulhas made it clear that the presidential candidate for 2029 will remain Prabowo Subianto. He explained that PAN has a long-standing partnership with the Gerindra Party, and Prabowo is the party’s clear candidate for the top position. “As for the presidential candidate, it’s pretty much settled with Prabowo,” he added.
When asked about the possibility of PAN supporting a ticket with Prabowo and Gibran for the 2029 election, Zulhas responded in a reserved manner, stating, “It’s still a long way off.” His statement suggested that such decisions are not yet finalized, and much can change as the election draws closer.
Zulkifli Hasan also elaborated on why he and PAN continue to support Prabowo for two consecutive terms. According to him, PAN and Gerindra have been close allies for many years, and this alliance has a long-term vision. He believes that their cooperation could last up to 2045. “When you’ve been allies for 15 years, there’s no reason not to continue. We’ve just won; let’s keep fighting for the next 15 years to continue building the nation, maybe until 2037 or even 2045, as suggested by the Minister of Development,” Zulhas explained.

Despite the firm stance on supporting Prabowo for president, Zulkifli Hasan stressed that the vice-presidential race is still open for anyone within PAN who wishes to pursue the position. He encouraged PAN members to aim for the vice-presidency, urging them to focus on competition without causing internal conflict. His message was clear: while everyone has the right to run for the vice-presidency, the primary goal is for PAN to emerge as one of the top four parties in the country.
“It’s important for PAN to remain among the top four political parties. That’s the real goal. We don’t want to fight over the vice-presidential position. Whoever has the desire to run for vice president, I welcome that. But above all, we must make sure that PAN remains strong and competitive,” Zulhas emphasized.
In addition to his remarks about the vice-presidential race, Zulhas also expressed his support for Prabowo in the upcoming presidential election. He made it clear that PAN would fully support Prabowo’s bid for the presidency in 2029. However, he also highlighted that it is crucial for PAN to have a role in the vice-presidential slot. “We are open to discussions regarding the vice-presidency. PAN is a large and influential party, and we will make sure our voice is heard,” he stated.
Zulhas also encouraged his party members to compete for the vice-presidency in a spirit of unity and professionalism. He reminded them that the ultimate goal is not to create division but to strengthen PAN’s position within the political landscape. “Our mission is clear: PAN must be one of the top four parties. We can compete, but we must do so with respect and without infighting,” he concluded.
As the 2029 elections approach, PAN’s internal dynamics and its alliance with Gerindra will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping Indonesia’s political landscape. Zulhas’ statements reflect both his commitment to Prabowo’s leadership and his desire to ensure that PAN remains a key player in the upcoming political battles.
