Independent Report – The Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) is set to hold its party congress this year. Sparking speculation that Indonesia’s seventh president, Joko Widodo (Jokowi). May join the party after his dismissal from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). This speculation has gained traction, especially since PSI Chairman Kaesang Pangarep. Welcomed the idea of renaming the party as an Open Party, a concept previously proposed by Jokowi.
Responding to these rumors, the Secretary General of the National Democratic Party (NasDem). Hermawi Taslim, stated that his party maintains a political friendship with Jokowi. He emphasized that NasDem respects Jokowi’s political choices, including the possibility of him joining PSI.
“NasDem fosters political friendship and always strives to engage in dialogue with all parties, including, but not limited to, Jokowi.” Hermawi said on Friday, March 27, 2025. He added that NasDem respects everyone’s political decisions. “It is quite normal for someone to be perceived as aligning with a particular political party. If Jokowi is seen as moving closer to PSI, that is nothing out of the ordinary,” he continued.
However, Hermawi admitted that he was unsure whether Jokowi would officially join PSI. “Wherever he decides to go is his constitutional right,” he concluded.
PSI is scheduled to hold its congress at the end of May 2025. One of the key agendas of the congress is the election of a new chairman and the structuring of the party’s leadership. Indonesia’s seventh president, Joko Widodo, has not yet determined his next political platform following his dismissal from PDI-P. Despite this, he remains a significant political figure with a strong following. Director of Rumah Politik Indonesia, Fernando Emas, stated that Jokowi needs a new political vehicle if he wishes to maintain his relevance in Indonesia’s political landscape.
“Joko Widodo needs a platform to sustain his political presence in Indonesia. He must join a party that plays a significant role in shaping the country’s political landscape,” Fernando said on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
He pointed out that PSI is a realistic option for Jokowi, as his son, Kaesang Pangarep, currently serves as the party’s chairman. “It is highly possible for Joko Widodo to join the party led by his youngest son. Moreover, Kaesang has implemented the concept of a super-open party, an idea originally introduced by Jokowi,” he explained.
Fernando believes that if Jokowi takes on a strategic role within PSI, it could have a major impact on the party. He argued that a collaboration between Kaesang as PSI’s chairman and Jokowi in a key position could significantly boost the party’s competitiveness and electability ahead of the 2029 elections.
“If Kaesang remains as chairman and Jokowi assumes a guiding role or another strategic position. PSI could increase its voter base in the 2029 elections,” Fernando stated.
With PSI’s upcoming congress and the ongoing speculation surrounding Jokowi’s political future, many are closely watching whether Indonesia’s former president will officially align himself with the party. Whether he decides to join PSI or chooses another path, his political influence remains a crucial factor in shaping Indonesia’s political landscape in the coming years.
